Free Featured Snippet Checker

Check whether a section works as a direct answer: answer length, where it sits, heading hierarchy, and whether it stands on its own.

BenchFree tool

Check your answer structure

Enter the full address of a public page. The checker fetches it once, extracts the main content, and analyzes its answer structure.

A short browser verification protects this free check. Checked pages are cached for 30 days - repeating a check on the same URL returns the stored result instead of fetching the page again.

How the result is produced

Deterministic document-structure checks highlight observable strengths and issues. There is no ideal length and no invented readiness probability.

There is no score for this, and anyone selling one is selling an invention

A document-structure check can describe the text you provide. It cannot calculate the probability that Google or an AI system will select it for an answer. Observed citations and search impressions need separate measurements.

This tool checks where an answer starts, how much text it contains, whether headings follow a clear hierarchy, and whether the section makes sense on its own. These observations help you review the writing; they do not reveal a search engine’s selection formula.

Google chooses featured snippets for individual searches and does not publish a fixed minimum answer length. A concise answer may help a reader, but a forty-to-sixty-word range is not an eligibility rule or a guarantee of selection.

Use the findings to improve clarity and test the result with actual readers and search data. The checker reports observable structure without turning it into a ranking or citation probability.

What Featured Snippet Checker checks

A featured snippet is not produced by a schema or a piece of markup. It happens when Google finds a section that answers a question completely and understandably on its own. The checker examines the structural preconditions: does the answer come early enough, is it short enough, does the section make sense without the surrounding text, and is the heading hierarchy intact?

The same properties help with AI answers, for a different reason. Answer engines work at passage level: they take a section, not a page. Subheadings act as labels - they tell the system what the following sentences are about. A section that makes no sense without the three paragraphs before it is not a candidate for extraction.

What this tool explicitly does not do is calculate a citation probability. There is no defensible basis for such a number, and any figure of that kind would be an invention. It checks what is observable: structure, length, position, self-containment.

The terms, briefly

Featured snippet
The highlighted answer block above the results. Google takes it from a page that already ranks; there is no markup you apply to enter the running.
Paragraph snippet
A prose passage selected to answer a particular search. The required length depends on the question and the information; Google does not publish a fixed word-count threshold.
List and table snippets
For sequences and comparisons. Google builds them from actual lists and tables in the HTML - prose that merely describes an enumeration does not produce one.
Passage ranking
Evaluating individual sections of a page rather than the page as a whole. One strong section can make an otherwise broad page relevant for a specific question.
Heading hierarchy
H1 through H6 nested without gaps. An H4 straight after an H2 leaves it ambiguous what the section belongs to - for software that splits text by structure, that is a real problem.

Reading the result

Clear and direct

The answer sits in the opening sentences after the heading and is short enough to be extracted whole.

Nothing.

Answer arrives too late

Preamble sits in front of the actual answer. Passage extraction then captures the run-up instead of the statement.

Make the first sentence after the heading the answer, and put the reasoning after it.

A level was skipped

The heading hierarchy has a gap, for example H2 followed directly by H4. What the section belongs to is no longer unambiguous.

Correct the level so each heading sits exactly one step below its parent.

Section is not self-contained

The text refers back with “this”, “as described above” or similar. Lifted out of context it means nothing.

Resolve the references and name the subject in the section's first sentence.

Not calculated

A citation probability is deliberately not reported. No verifiable method exists to determine one.

Nothing. Measure actual impressions and mentions instead.

Three mistakes we see constantly

  • Optimising for a word count

There is no minimum length that triggers a snippet. Padding a page to 2,000 words tends to make the answer harder to find, because the relevant passage drowns in volume.

  • Treating FAQ schema as a snippet lever

Since August 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results essentially only for government and health sites. The markup still helps machines pair a question with its answer - it does not buy most sites an expanded listing.

  • Hiding the answer in the conclusion

Posing the question in the heading and answering at the end of the section serves readers and extraction systems everything except the answer first.

Questions about Featured Snippet Checker

How long should an answer be for a featured snippet?

There is no fixed word count that makes a passage eligible. Answer the question clearly and include the context needed to understand it. Google selects snippets for individual searches.

Do I need structured data for a featured snippet?

No. Google takes snippets from ordinary page content. There is no markup that enters you into the running for one. Structured data is useful for other result formats - for snippets it is the text and its structure that count.

Why don't you calculate an AI citation score?

Because there is no verifiable basis for one. Whether an AI system cites a passage depends on the specific prompt, the model, the moment, and the competing sources. A number compressing that into a score would be invented - and would base decisions on a fiction.

Does better structure help without a top-10 ranking?

Barely for featured snippets - Google draws them almost exclusively from pages already on the first page. For AI answers it is different: there, position in classic search matters less than whether a passage cleanly answers the sub-question that was asked.

Can I lose a featured snippet by shortening the answer?

Yes, it happens - usually when the shortened version drops a qualifier or figure that was part of the snippet. Change sections that hold a snippet in small steps and watch the effect, rather than rewriting them.

Checking one section is easy. Keeping a hundred articles in view is not.

Judging a text's structure while writing it is manageable. The question is what happens to the articles written two years ago.

  • Checks answer structure across the whole corpus instead of section by section.
  • Prioritises pages that already have impressions - that is where a fix pays off immediately.
  • Tracks whether a change actually had an effect, rather than asserting it did.
